GOLD TOOL FAQ

Know what the numbers mean.

These short explanations clarify the market references and calculations used across the toolkit.

What is spot gold price?

The spot gold price is an indicative market reference for gold available for immediate settlement. Dealer prices can differ because they include product premiums, spreads, taxes, delivery and local supply conditions.

How are futures prices different?

Gold futures are exchange-traded contracts for delivery or settlement at a specified future date. They can trade above or below spot because of interest rates, storage costs, time to expiry and market expectations.

How do I calculate scrap gold value?

Convert the item weight to grams, multiply by its karat divided by 24, then multiply by the current gold price per gram. A buyer may offer less than melt value after testing, refining costs and margin.

What is a gold bar premium?

A gold bar premium is the amount charged above its underlying melt value. It can reflect fabrication, mint reputation, bar size, dealer inventory, payment method and current demand.

Which calculator should I use?

Use the Scrap Gold Calculator for jewellery, dental gold and mixed-karat items. Use the Gold Coin & Bar Calculator for named bullion products, historic U.S. coins and custom bars. Use the Gold Silver Ratio Calculator when comparing the relative value of the two metals or estimating a metal-for-metal swap.

Will a dealer pay the exact value shown?

Usually not. Calculator results are indicative metal values, not binding dealer quotes. A dealer may adjust an offer for testing, refining, product condition, local demand, transaction size and their operating margin.

How current are the prices used by the tools?

The calculators use the latest available GoldPriceNow spot reference. Each tool shows its own last-updated time so you can confirm when the underlying market price was refreshed.

Can I calculate in grams, troy ounces or pennyweight?

Yes. Available units depend on the tool, but the calculators support the common measurements used for jewellery and bullion, including grams, troy ounces and pennyweight. Conversion is handled before the metal value is calculated.

Does changing currency change the gold value?

No. Currency conversion changes how the result is displayed, not the underlying quantity or purity of the metal. Exchange-rate movement can still affect the local-currency estimate.
