LOCAL PRICE QUESTIONS

Gold price in Australia: FAQ

Clear answers to the questions buyers ask before comparing gold prices, units and dealer offers.

Why is the retail gold price in Australia higher than the price shown here?

This page shows a spot-derived value in Australian dollars. Dealers add fabrication or minting, insurance, payment costs, delivery, inventory and margin. The final premium depends on product size, mint, condition and current supply.

Should gold be priced per gram or troy ounce in Australia?

Australian bullion is generally compared per troy ounce, equal to 31.1035 grams, while jewellery and scrap are commonly valued per gram. A regular 28.3495-gram ounce is not the precious-metals standard.

Is investment gold subject to GST in Australia?

Gold in investment form with a fineness of at least 99.5% can qualify as a precious metal under Australian GST rules. The first supply after refining can be GST-free and subsequent qualifying supplies can be input-taxed. Jewellery and non-qualifying products are treated differently.

Why are 24K, 22K and 18K gold prices different in Australia?

24K is the fine-gold reference, 22K is about 91.7%, 18K is 75% and 9K is 37.5% gold. 9K is common in Australian jewellery, while investment bars and many bullion coins use much higher purity.

Is the gold price different in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth?

The underlying AUD market reference is shared, but the final cost differs through dealer premium, local stock, payment method, insured delivery and buyback spread. Perth Mint products can also trade at different premiums from other brands and mints.

How often is this gold price updated?

The page refreshes its spot and currency references approximately every three minutes while the tab is visible, then refreshes once when you return. The timestamp beside the live rate shows the latest successful update.

What gold products are popular in Australia?

Perth Mint Kangaroo coins and minted or cast bars are widely recognised, alongside products from other established mints and refiners. Compare product premium, size, packaging, storage and resale liquidity before buying.

Which gold price unit should I track in Australia?

Use AUD per troy ounce for bullion and AUD per gram for jewellery or scrap. Always compare the same fineness and distinguish between a dealer's retail price, its buyback price and the spot-derived reference.
