LOCAL PRICE QUESTIONS
Gold price in United States: FAQ
Clear answers to the questions buyers ask before comparing gold prices, units and dealer offers.
Why does my local dealer charge more than the price shown here?
The rate on this page is the global spot price, the raw metal value before retail costs. U.S. dealers add premiums for minting, shipping, insurance, inventory and margin. Premiums vary by product and market conditions, and any applicable state or local tax can increase the final cost.
What is the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?
Gold and silver are traded in troy ounces. One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, while a regular avoirdupois ounce equals 28.3495 grams. All ounce prices on GoldPriceNow use troy ounces unless clearly stated otherwise.
Do I pay sales tax when buying gold in the United States?
It depends on the state, product and transaction size. Texas exempts qualifying gold and silver coins and bullion. New York has a conditional investment-bullion exemption for qualifying single-invoice purchases over $1,000, while California's bulk-sale exemption currently starts at $2,000 and is subject to conditions and future adjustment. Florida rules also distinguish qualifying bullion and coin transactions. Always confirm the current rule with the state tax authority or dealer before buying.
Why are 24K, 22K and 18K gold prices different?
Karat measures purity. 24K is the 99.9% pure-gold reference, 22K is about 91.7% gold, and 18K is 75% gold. The displayed value changes with the amount of pure gold in the item. A 22K American Gold Eagle contains one troy ounce of fine gold but weighs more overall because it also contains alloy metals.
Is the gold price the same in every U.S. city?
The underlying global spot benchmark is the same nationwide. The amount a buyer pays can differ because dealer premiums, local competition, inventory, payment method, shipping and state or local tax treatment vary. The city ranges below are indicative comparisons, not live dealer quotes.
How often is this gold price updated?
The page checks the spot reference every 60 seconds during market hours. The timestamp beside the live rate shows the latest successful update. Dealer premium ranges and tax context are reviewed separately and should be verified before a transaction.
What are the most popular gold products for U.S. investors?
American Gold Eagles and 24K American Gold Buffalo coins are widely recognized in the U.S. market. One-ounce and smaller bars from established refiners are also common. Availability, dealer spread and resale recognition can matter as much as the initial premium.
Should I track the gold price in dollars or grams?
Bullion investors in the United States usually compare prices per troy ounce, while jewelry and scrap-gold buyers often work in grams or pennyweights. This page shows all three. When comparing offers, use the same unit, purity and timestamp for every quote.
