LOCAL PRICE QUESTIONS
Gold price in South Africa: FAQ
Clear answers to the questions buyers ask before comparing gold prices, units and dealer offers.
Why is the retail gold price in South Africa higher than the price shown here?
This page shows a spot-derived rand value. A retail quote can also include minting or fabrication, distribution, insurance, stock, payment costs and dealer margin. Krugerrands, bars, jewellery and scrap each have different retail and buyback spreads.
How does a Krugerrand's weight relate to a troy ounce?
A standard one-ounce Krugerrand contains one troy ounce of fine gold but weighs more overall because it is a durable 22K alloy. The international troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams. Jewellery and scrap are usually compared by gram and purity.
Is gold subject to VAT in South Africa?
VAT treatment depends on the form and transaction. Krugerrands issued by the South African Reserve Bank are among the gold coins treated as zero-rated supplies, while jewellery, other gold forms and business-to-business valuable-metal transactions can follow different rules.
Why are 24K, 22K and 18K gold prices different in South Africa?
24K is the fine-gold reference, 22K is about 91.7% and 18K is 75% gold. A 22K Krugerrand still contains its stated fine-gold weight because the alloy increases the coin's total weight rather than reducing its gold content.
Is the gold price different in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban?
The spot-derived ZAR benchmark is shared, but dealer premium, product stock, insured delivery, payment method and buyback spreads vary. The rand exchange rate can also change the local price even when the international dollar price is stable.
How often is this gold price updated?
The page refreshes its spot and currency references approximately every three minutes while the tab is visible, then refreshes once when you return. The timestamp beside the live rate shows the latest successful update.
What gold products are popular in South Africa?
Krugerrands are the best-known local bullion product, with full-ounce and fractional sizes. Refinery bars and jewellery are also traded. Buyers should compare fine-gold content, premium, authenticity, condition and resale terms.
Which gold price unit should I track in South Africa?
Use ZAR per troy ounce for bullion and ZAR per gram for jewellery or scrap. Keep the purity and product type consistent, and distinguish spot value from a dealer's retail or buyback quote.
