LOCAL PRICE QUESTIONS
Gold price in Canada: FAQ
Clear answers to the questions buyers ask before comparing gold prices, units and dealer offers.
Why is the retail gold price in Canada higher than the price shown here?
This page shows a spot-derived value in Canadian dollars. A dealer's retail price also includes minting or fabrication, insurance, shipping, payment costs, inventory and margin. Smaller products often have higher percentage premiums, and dealer buyback prices can be below spot.
Should Canadians track gold by gram or troy ounce?
Bullion is usually compared per troy ounce, equal to 31.1035 grams. Jewellery, small bars and scrap gold are often valued per gram. Keep the unit and purity consistent when comparing prices from different Canadian dealers.
Is gold subject to GST or HST in Canada?
Qualifying precious metals can be treated as financial instruments and their supply is generally exempt when the product meets the Canadian definition, including at least 99.5% purity for gold in accepted bar, ingot, coin or wafer form. Jewellery and lower-purity products can be taxable.
Why are 24K, 22K and 18K gold prices different in Canada?
24K is the fine-gold reference, 22K is about 91.7% gold and 18K is 75% gold. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is 99.99% pure. Lower-karat jewellery contains less fine gold per gram and therefore has a lower melt value.
Is the gold price the same across Canadian provinces?
The underlying CAD spot reference is national, but the delivered price can differ by dealer, province, shipping, payment method, inventory and tax treatment of the specific product. Compare total cost and buyback terms in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and elsewhere.
How often is this gold price updated?
The page refreshes its spot and currency references approximately every three minutes while the tab is visible, then refreshes once when you return. The timestamp beside the live rate shows the latest successful update.
What gold products are popular in Canada?
Canadian Gold Maple Leafs and recognised refinery bars are widely traded. Buyers often compare premiums, sizes, assay packaging, delivery, storage and dealer buyback policies. Collectible coins can trade for reasons that go beyond their gold content.
Which gold price unit should I track in Canada?
Use CAD per troy ounce for standard bullion comparisons and CAD per gram for jewellery, scrap and fractional products. Confirm whether a quote is the dealer's selling price, buyback price or the underlying spot reference.
