LOCAL PRICE QUESTIONS
Gold price in Japan: FAQ
Clear answers to the questions buyers ask before comparing gold prices, units and dealer offers.
Why is the retail gold price in Japan higher than the price shown here?
This page shows a spot-derived value in yen. Japanese dealer prices can also include fabrication, distribution, applicable consumption tax, account or storage services and margin. Retail and dealer buyback prices are therefore different.
Is gold priced per gram or troy ounce in Japan?
Japanese retail bullion prices are commonly shown per gram. The international market uses the troy ounce, equal to 31.1035 grams. Use yen per gram for local dealer comparisons and the ounce price for global market context.
Is physical gold subject to consumption tax in Japan?
Physical gold sold as a product in Japan is generally handled as a taxable transaction, and dealer retail quotes commonly reflect applicable consumption tax. Imported coins bought for resale can also be taxable. The treatment of a later sale or business input credit depends on the facts, so keep records and confirm current rules.
Why are 24K, 22K and 18K gold prices different in Japan?
24K is the fine-gold reference, 22K is about 91.7% and 18K is 75%. Investment bars are commonly high-purity gold, while 18K is frequently used in jewellery for strength. Japanese marks may show K24, K18 or numerical fineness.
Is the gold price different in Tokyo and Osaka?
The yen market reference is broadly shared, but dealer spreads, fabrication, payment timing, storage, inventory and buyback conditions differ. Compare published retail and repurchase prices from the same timestamp.
How often is this gold price updated?
The page refreshes its spot and currency references approximately every three minutes while the tab is visible, then refreshes once when you return. The timestamp beside the live rate shows the latest successful update.
What gold products are popular in Japan?
High-purity bars from recognised Japanese refiners, bullion coins and accumulation plans are common ways to gain physical gold exposure. Buyers should compare fees, storage, delivery thresholds and resale procedures.
Which gold price unit should I track in Japan?
JPY per gram is the most practical local measure. Use JPY per troy ounce when comparing Japan with international markets, and separate the spot-derived metal value from tax, fabrication and dealer spread.
