LOCAL PRICE QUESTIONS
Gold price in Switzerland: FAQ
Clear answers to the questions buyers ask before comparing gold prices, units and dealer offers.
Why is the retail gold price in Switzerland higher than the price shown here?
This page shows a spot-derived value in Swiss francs. Dealer prices can also include refining or minting, assay, secure transport, storage, payment costs and margin. Small minted bars usually carry higher percentage premiums than larger cast bars.
Is gold priced per gram or troy ounce in Switzerland?
Swiss bars are often sold in metric weights such as 1 gram, 20 grams, 100 grams and 1 kilogram. International comparisons use the troy ounce, equal to 31.1035 grams. Jewellery and scrap are usually assessed by gram and fineness.
Is investment gold subject to VAT in Switzerland?
Qualifying investment gold is exempt from Swiss VAT. The exemption includes eligible bank-standard bars and certain coins, with purity and product requirements; gold in other forms, jewellery and services do not automatically receive the same treatment.
Why are 24K, 22K and 18K gold prices different in Switzerland?
24K is the fine-gold reference and Swiss investment bars are commonly 999.9 fine. 18K corresponds to 750 fineness and 14K to 585. The melt value depends on fine-gold content, not only the item's gross weight.
Is the gold price different in Zurich, Geneva and other Swiss cities?
The underlying CHF market reference is shared, but premiums vary by refinery, bar size, coin, payment method, delivery, storage and buyback policy. Vaulted or allocated products can also include custody and withdrawal charges.
How often is this gold price updated?
The page refreshes its spot and currency references approximately every three minutes while the tab is visible, then refreshes once when you return. The timestamp beside the live rate shows the latest successful update.
What gold products are popular in Switzerland?
Swiss refinery bars are widely recognised, and buyers also trade established bullion coins and historic Swiss coins. Check refinery or mint recognition, assay packaging, serialisation, storage arrangement and resale spread.
Which gold price unit should I track in Switzerland?
Use CHF per gram for metric bars, jewellery and scrap and CHF per troy ounce for global bullion comparisons. Separate metal value from storage, delivery and fabrication costs.
