LOCAL PRICE QUESTIONS

Gold price in United Kingdom: FAQ

Clear answers to the questions buyers ask before comparing gold prices, units and dealer offers.

Why is the retail gold price in United Kingdom higher than the price shown here?

This page shows a spot-derived gold value. UK dealers add a product premium for minting, fabrication, insurance, delivery, stock and margin. Smaller bars and coins usually carry a higher percentage premium than larger products, while buyback prices can sit below spot.

What is the difference between a troy ounce and a gram in the UK gold market?

The international bullion market uses the troy ounce, which equals 31.1035 grams. UK jewellery and scrap-gold quotes are often shown per gram. A regular household ounce is only 28.3495 grams and should not be used for precious-metal calculations.

Is investment gold subject to VAT in the UK?

Qualifying investment gold is exempt from VAT under UK rules. The definition covers eligible bars, wafers and certain gold coins, subject to purity and product conditions. Jewellery and non-qualifying collectible products do not automatically receive the same treatment.

Why are 24K, 22K and 18K gold prices different in United Kingdom?

24K is the fine-gold reference, 22K is about 91.7% gold and 18K is 75% gold. Modern Britannia bullion coins are 24K, while Sovereigns are 22K. UK jewellery may also carry fineness hallmarks such as 750 or 916.

Is the gold price different in London, Birmingham and Manchester?

The underlying GBP spot reference is the same, but dealer premiums, shop overhead, product availability, delivery and buyback spreads differ. Compare the final delivered price and the dealer's resale terms, not only the headline price per ounce.

How often is this gold price updated?

The page refreshes its spot and currency references approximately every three minutes while the tab is visible, then refreshes once when you return. The timestamp beside the live rate shows the latest successful update.

What gold products are popular in United Kingdom?

Britannia bullion coins, Sovereigns and investment bars from recognised refiners are widely followed. Product choice often depends on budget, premium, divisibility, storage and resale recognition. UK legal-tender coins can also have tax considerations beyond VAT.

Which gold price unit should I track in United Kingdom?

Use GBP per troy ounce when comparing bullion and GBP per gram for jewellery or scrap. If you are selling, compare offers using the same purity, weight and timestamp and check whether the quote is a retail price or a dealer buyback price.
